Why buyers look beyond Ahrefs
ChatSEO, which sells a rival tool, says the complaint is almost never quality but the bill and the shape of the plans. It says the Lite plan at $129/month is a lot for a solo consultant. It adds that once you need more than 5 projects or 750 tracked keywords, the next step is $249/month, with no gentle middle.
chatseo.appChatSEO also says Ahrefs moved to a credit model with 1,000 credits per user on the Lite plan, and that plenty of users report rationing their own research. It notes that Ahrefs now has a $29/month Starter plan, which it describes as credit-capped.
chatseo.appChatSEO adds that Ahrefs estimates your traffic from its index and doesn't use your Google Search Console data to flag, for example, a page at position 11 with many impressions that needs a better title, though Ahrefs' own homepage lists a GSC Insights tool for monitoring your rankings in Google Search Console. It also says the backlink index is the one area where cheaper alternatives genuinely fall short.
chatseo.appStoryChief, which sells a rival content tool, says the $129 per month starting price makes many freelancers and small teams think twice. It says this pushes people toward platforms that still offer rank tracking, site audits and keyword intent insights at lower cost.
storychief.ioStoryChief lists Google Keyword Planner as a free option for budget researchers, with free, accurate keyword data.
storychief.ioSurfaceable, which sells a rival tool, says Ahrefs pricing is built around its full backlink database and keyword tools. It says that if your main need is a technical audit and AI visibility tracking, you're paying for a lot of data you don't use.
surfaceable.ioSurfaceable also says Ahrefs has no data on brand appearances in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews and doesn't act on its data. Ahrefs' own homepage contradicts this. It lists Brand Radar for tracking brand visibility in LLMs, Custom Prompts, the Ask Ahrefs assistant, an SEO MCP, and Letaido, which it describes as putting agents to work building reports and automating workflows.

When Heddle is the wrong choice
Heddle, which publishes this page, is not a like-for-like swap for Ahrefs, and it left itself off this list. Heddle is a done-for-you service. Its AI agents find the searches your buyers make, publish and refresh the pages that answer them, draft links and listings, and draft replies to enquiries.
Its own pages do not describe a backlink index, a keyword database or a report builder that you query yourself. If you want self-serve SEO data for link building, competitor research or client reporting, choose one of the tools above. Heddle also publishes no price.
It quotes each plan after a free search audit and a call, so it will not suit someone who wants to sign up today at a known monthly cost. It is not quick to try either.
First pages usually go live in three to five weeks, and the first decision on what the pages earned comes about six weeks after launch. It also asks for things a tool subscription does not, including read access to Search Console and a named person to approve each agent's work. Every business starts with Search, not with video or ads.
How the list was made
We started from the lists that rank for Ahrefs alternatives. Then we read each candidate's own website on 11 October 2026 and described it from there. A product whose website we could not read is not listed, and nothing here is a hands-on benchmark.
Each reason for leaving links to where it was said, and when the source is a rival vendor with its own tool to sell, the reason tells you so. We build Heddle and wrote this page, and Heddle is not on the list. Nobody paid to be listed.
This page was drafted by Heddle's own page families agent and checked by the same gates as every page on this site. How that agent works
