What are Google AI Overviews, and how does a site get included in them?
What Google AI Overviews are, when they appear, and how pages get linked from them
AI Overviews are an AI feature in Google Search that helps people understand a complex topic quickly and links to sites where they can learn more. Google says no extra requirements or special optimization are needed to be included. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search, and normal SEO practice applies.
When Heddle works on your site, it starts from the basics Google names for its AI features. Pages should be crawlable, indexed and eligible for snippets, with important content in text and structured data that matches what visitors see. How an engagement works.
What they are
AI Overviews are one of the AI features Google has added to Search, and Google says they help a person understand a complicated topic faster. Each one includes links to sites where the reader can go further. Like other Search features, they exist to point people to relevant content, and Google adds that they give more sites a chance to be found through Search.
When Google shows one
Google says an AI Overview is triggered when a query could benefit from more information than a standard result gives. It appears only when its systems decide it adds something to the regular results, so many searches won't show one.
AI Mode is a separate feature. Google positions it for questions that need more research, reasoning or comparison of options, the kind that once took several searches. Because the two features may use different models and techniques, the same question can produce different answers and different links in each.
How the answer is built
Both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use what Google calls query fan-out, which sends several related searches about subtopics to different data sources. Google says this lets its models find more relevant pages while the answer is generated, and the result is a wider, more varied set of supporting links than a standard web search would show.
Getting your pages linked
Google's position is that ordinary SEO is enough. A page just has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search to appear as a supporting link.
Meeting Google's existing technical requirements covers that, though Google doesn't promise that any page will be crawled, indexed or shown.
The basics it lists are to allow crawling in robots.txt and in your CDN and hosting setup, and to link to important pages internally. Give visitors a good page experience and put important content in text. Where it helps, support that text with high quality images and video, and make sure any structured data matches the text people can actually see.

Questions
Do I need special optimization to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements and no special optimization needed. The page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Search, and standard SEO practice still applies.
How are AI Overviews different from AI Mode?
AI Overviews appear in regular search results when Google judges they add value, while AI Mode is for questions that need more exploration, reasoning and comparison. Google says the two may use different models and techniques, so their answers and links differ.
Does every Google search show an AI Overview?
No. Google says one appears only when its systems determine it adds to the classic search results.
