What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization: the paper, the claim and the caveats

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the name a 2023 research paper gave to making content more visible inside answers written by AI search engines. The paper, published at KDD 2024, reported that some edits to a page could raise its visibility in those answers by up to 40%, with results that varied by subject. In practice GEO and AEO describe the same goal.

When TechFabric sets Heddle up on your site, every claim on a page carries its source, which is the part of the research that also helps a person reading it. How an engagement works.

Where the term comes from

The phrase comes from a paper by researchers including Pranjal Aggarwal and Karthik Narasimhan, first posted to arXiv on 16 November 2023 and accepted to KDD 2024. It treated an AI search engine as a black box and asked which edits to a source page made that page more visible in the generated answer. The team built a benchmark, GEO-bench, with queries across many domains to test the edits.

The 40% figure

The abstract says GEO can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses. Read the words "up to". It's the best case in the paper's own benchmark and setup, and the authors note that what works differs by domain. It isn't a promise about any one site, and it was measured on engines as they were in 2023 and 2024.

Marketing pages that quote the number without that context are using a research ceiling as a sales forecast. Heddle's claims rules forbid that kind of multiplier on its own site.

What to take from it

The useful part is the idea that a source page can be edited to be quoted, and the edits that tend to help are the ones that also help a person. That means specific facts with their sources, numbers that can be checked, and quotations attributed to someone.

Google's own guidance points the same way from the other side. It says rewriting content just for AI systems isn't needed for Google Search. So write the page for the reader, make every claim checkable, and measure citations as their own number.

Questions

Is GEO the same as AEO?

They name the same goal, which is being found and cited in AI-written answers. GEO comes from a 2023 research paper; AEO is the older industry term from featured snippets and voice answers.

Does GEO really increase visibility by 40%?

The paper reports up to 40% in its own benchmark, with results that vary by domain. It's a ceiling measured in 2023 and 2024, not an expected gain for a given site.
