What is Google AI Mode, and how does a site show up in it?
What Google AI Mode is, how it answers, and how pages get linked from it
Google AI Mode is a mode inside Google Search that answers complex, multi-part questions with an AI-written response, links to supporting web pages, and lets people ask follow-up questions. Google introduced it as a Labs experiment on 5 March 2025. A page can appear as a link in it if it is indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no extra requirements and no special optimization needed beyond normal SEO.
When Heddle is set up on your site, its agent-ready check confirms on every build that pages are crawlable and allowed in robots.txt. Google lists those same basics, along with being indexed and eligible for a snippet, as what a page needs to be linked from AI Mode. How an engagement works.
What AI Mode does
AI Mode is a separate mode of Google Search for questions that would otherwise take several searches, such as exploring a new concept or comparing detailed options. A person asks a question, gets a written answer with links to pages that support it, and can keep asking follow-up questions.
Google introduced it in March 2025 as an experiment in Labs. The announcement framed it as a response to power users who wanted AI answers for more of their searches than AI Overviews covered.
At launch it ran on a custom version of Gemini 2.0.
How it builds an answer
AI Mode uses what Google calls query fan-out. It breaks one question into many related searches, runs them at the same time across subtopics and data sources, and combines what it finds into one response. Google's optimization guide gives an example: a question about getting rid of lawn weeds might fan out into searches for the best lawn herbicides, removing weeds without chemicals, and preventing weeds in the first place.
The answer is grounded in Google's search index. Google's core ranking systems retrieve the pages, the model reads specific information on them, and the response links to the pages that support it.
Google says this surfaces a wider and more varied set of links than a traditional search. Because AI Mode and AI Overviews can use different models and techniques, the same question can produce different answers and different links in each.
How a page gets linked
Google's AI features guide is direct about this. To appear as a supporting link in AI Mode, a page must be indexed, eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet, and meet the normal technical requirements for Search. There are no further technical requirements.
Meeting them doesn't promise that Google will crawl, index or show the page.
The practical work is ordinary SEO. Google lists checking that crawling is allowed in robots.txt and through any CDN or hosting layer, and making content easy to find through internal links. Its optimization guide adds that original content from first-hand experience stands out, because the AI reads many sources, and a rewrite of what is already published adds nothing new. Google also says that what some people call AEO or GEO is, from its point of view, still SEO.
Measuring it
Search Console now separates out generative AI visibility. The Search Generative AI performance reports, launched in June 2026 and available to all sites since 31 August 2026, show how often a site's URLs appeared in features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode.
The reports break this down by page, country, device and date, down to hourly granularity. The same impressions are still counted in the overall performance report, so the new view is a slice of that total, not an addition to it.

Questions
Do I need to optimize separately for Google AI Mode?
No. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, that there are no extra requirements to appear in them, and that no special optimization is needed.
Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?
No. AI Overviews appear at the top of some normal search results. AI Mode is a separate mode built for harder, multi-part questions and follow-ups. Google says the two can use different models and techniques, so their answers and links can differ.
How can I see if my site appears in AI Mode?
Use the Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console. They show impressions in generative AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. Google rolled them out to all websites worldwide as of 31 August 2026.
