Humanizer Check

The humanizer check fails copy whose vocabulary, punctuation or rhythm reads as machine-written, using rules a script can apply. Without it, copy can carry the words and rhythms readers have learned to spot as machine-written, and they discount everything else on the page. The mechanically checkable half of reading as written by a person. The other half, whether a paragraph says anything, is the quality check's model. Two kinds of rule.

When Heddle is set up on your site, this check runs on every build alongside 15 others, so a page that fails it is fixed before a buyer or a search engine sees it.

Why it exists

The mechanically checkable half of reading as written by a person. The other half, whether a paragraph says anything, is the quality check's model.

Two kinds of rule. Line rules a word, a character or a phrase on one line (banned vocabulary, em dashes, "not only... but", filler) document rules the shape of the whole piece. Sentence-length spread, contraction ratio, colon payoffs, specifics per 500 words, paragraph spread, three short sentences in a row

Each threshold was set on real pages that read as generated and had passed every vocabulary rule: seven posts with 85 expanded forms and no contractions, thirteen "claim. Item, item, item" sentences, twelve paragraphs of 44 words each. A company whose house style differs turns a rule off by id in site.json humanizer.disable.

Questions

What does the humanizer check look for?

Vocabulary, punctuation and rhythm that read as machine-written.

Does the humanizer check need an AI model?

No. It reads the built pages or the sources directly, so it runs offline and costs nothing per run.

How do I run it?

Build the site, then run node bin/heddle.mjs check <site> --only humanizer from the Heddle repository.
